A useful used-car viewing starts before you arrive. A short set of written questions can confirm whether the vehicle matches your budget and whether the seller is prepared to provide basic evidence. It also creates a record of what was represented before any deposit is discussed. These questions work for both dealer and direct-owner listings.

1. Who is the registered owner?

Ask whether the vehicle is registered to the seller, a customer, a company or a finance party. The answer should match the transfer pathway explained to you.

2. What exactly is included in the advertised price?

Request an itemised quotation. Confirm administrative fees, financing conditions, insurance requirements, transfer charges and any compulsory add-ons before comparing offers.

3. What is the COE expiry date?

The remaining COE period affects how long the car can stay registered without renewal. Verify the date through the available vehicle records rather than relying only on advertisement text.

4. Is the vehicle under financing?

LTA notes that vehicles being transferred should not be under financing. Ask how any outstanding loan will be settled and when the vehicle will be ready for transfer.

5. Can you share the service history?

Request dated invoices rather than a general statement that the car was regularly serviced. Look for consistent mileage and model-specific maintenance.

6. Has the vehicle had accident or structural repair?

Ask directly, then verify through inspection. Paintwork can be repaired well, so the key issue is whether structural areas and safety systems are sound.

7. Are any warning lights or known faults present?

Ask for a current dashboard video with the engine running. Confirm whether any fault, intermittent symptom or recent repair remains unresolved.

8. Can the engine be left cold for the viewing?

A cold start can reveal starting, smoke, idle and noise issues that are less obvious after warm-up. A reasonable seller should understand the request.

9. May I arrange an independent inspection?

Clarify the location, timing and who pays. Refusal does not prove a defect, but it increases uncertainty and should affect your decision.

10. What documents will I receive?

Ask for the sales agreement, itemised invoice, available service records, inspection report and written warranty terms. Confirm that vehicle identifiers match official records.

11. What deposit terms apply?

Before paying, ask whether the deposit is refundable, what conditions apply and what happens if financing or inspection is unsuccessful. Get the answer in writing.

12. When and how will ownership be transferred?

Confirm the handover sequence, insurance requirement and OneMotoring transfer steps. LTA states that the ownership transfer should be completed within seven days.

Turn the answers into a shortlist

A seller does not need to write a long report, but clear and consistent answers help you decide whether a viewing is worth the time. Compare evidence, not confidence. If key answers change during the viewing, pause before paying.

Send the same questions to every seller. A repeatable process prevents a striking photo or urgent sales message from replacing basic verification.
