Before purchase, buyers should check official recall information and confirm whether the required rectification has been completed. A vehicle recall check in Singapore is a simple but important part of due diligence.
What is a vehicle recall?
A manufacturer may recall a model when it identifies a defect that requires rectification. The issue can involve safety systems, electrical components, fuel delivery, software or other parts. A recall does not automatically mean that every car of the model is affected; eligibility can depend on the vehicle’s production range or chassis number.
How Singapore recall information works
LTA states that motor dealers and importers must notify LTA and affected owners when a vehicle is recalled. They are also responsible for arranging the rectification work.
LTA’s Electronic Vehicle Recall System allows users to check recall exercises and the status of rectification work. Vehicle-specific services may require login.
What to request from the seller
- Vehicle registration and chassis details
- Any recall notice received
- Workshop or authorised-agent completion record
- Date and mileage when rectification was performed
- Confirmation of any outstanding appointment or parts delay
Match the chassis number on the physical car with the official record. Do not rely only on the advertisement’s model name.
If an open recall appears
Ask the authorised distributor or responsible importer whether the car is affected and what action is required. Confirm whether the repair is available, how long it takes and whether there is any cost to the owner. Obtain the answer in writing where possible.
If the issue is safety-related, complete the required work before regular use. A pre-purchase inspection is still recommended because recall rectification does not assess the entire condition of the vehicle.
Recall check versus service history
These are different records. Recall work addresses a defined manufacturer campaign. Service history shows maintenance and repairs over time. A strong purchase file should include both, plus a current inspection of the engine, gearbox, chassis, electronics, tyres and brakes.
Add the result to the sales file
Save a dated screenshot or printout of the enquiry, the seller’s disclosure and any completion invoice. This creates a clear record of what was known at the time of purchase.
