An advertised price is useful for finding a car, but it may not show the complete amount required to complete the purchase. Buyers comparing used car dealer fees in Singapore should request an itemised written quotation before paying a deposit.
Ask what the advertised price represents
Start by confirming whether the advertised figure is the full selling price, a promotional price tied to dealer financing, or a price that depends on an insurance package or trade-in. Ask the dealer to show the price again without optional products so that you can compare like with like.
Do not assume that words such as “from,” “package” or “drive-away” have the same meaning at every dealership. The quotation should state the exact vehicle, registration number, agreed price and conditions.
Separate compulsory and optional items
A useful quotation separates the vehicle price from every other charge. Items may include an administrative fee, ownership-transfer service, road-tax adjustment, insurance, loan processing, warranty package, inspection, grooming or accessories.
Some items may be necessary for your transaction, while others are optional commercial services. Ask whether you may arrange insurance or financing independently and whether choosing another provider changes the vehicle price.
Check financing conditions carefully
A low advertised price may depend on taking a particular loan. Request the cash price and financed price in writing. For any loan, compare the principal, interest method, tenure, monthly instalment, total interest, early-settlement terms and late-payment consequences.
Do not judge affordability only by the monthly instalment. A longer tenure can reduce the monthly payment while increasing the total amount paid.
Confirm deposit and refund terms
Before paying, the document should state:
- The deposit amount and payment deadline
- Whether the deposit is refundable
- Events that allow either party to cancel
- What happens if financing is not approved
- The expected handover date
- Any rectification promised before delivery
Keep an official receipt for every payment. Avoid signing blank forms or relying on important verbal promises.
Put the final package in one document
The final sales agreement should record the vehicle price, included warranty, accessories, servicing, road tax, insurance and all fees. If a discount is offered, confirm the genuine reference price and the conditions attached to it.
Singapore's Competition and Consumer Commission encourages price transparency, accurate representations and written contract terms. Buyers can also review its official motor-vehicle purchasing guidance before committing.
FATCAR buyer checklist
Compare the total payable amount, not only the headline price. A transparent quotation should let you answer three questions immediately: how much is due now, how much will be paid later, and exactly what FATCAR or the seller will deliver.
