Engine Number and Chassis Number Checks Before Vehicle Export
The most important photograph in an export transaction may not be the front of the car. It may be the image that proves the chassis or VIN number matches the documents. Vehicle identifiers connect the physical car to its registration record, invoice, export declaration and destination clearance.
What is a chassis number or VIN?
The chassis number identifies the vehicle’s structure and production identity. Many modern vehicles use a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), although formats can vary for older vehicles or certain markets.
The number may appear on the body, dashboard area, door aperture, engine bay or manufacturer plate. A buyer should ask for a clear image of the permanent identifier and any supporting plate.
What is the engine number?
The engine number identifies the installed engine unit. Its location depends on the engine design and may be difficult to photograph without cleaning or workshop access. Do not confuse the individual engine number with the general engine code used to identify an engine family.
Why identifiers matter in Singapore
The Land Transport Authority states that engine and chassis numbers must match LTA records in the vehicle deregistration process. Accurate identity is therefore part of a properly documented export.
Singapore Customs also requires an export permit for permanently exported vehicles and an accurate declaration supported by relevant documents.

Destination customs and vehicle-registration authorities may inspect the VIN or chassis number and compare it with the invoice, bill of lading, export documents and import approval. A mismatch can lead to delays, additional inspection or rejection.
A practical identity-check sequence
- Obtain the available vehicle details before payment.
- Request clear photos of the chassis/VIN and engine number.
- Compare every character carefully, including zero and the letter O.
- Check that the commercial invoice repeats the correct identifier.
- Confirm that the shipping instruction and bill of lading will use the same number.
- Ask the destination agent which identifier format is required for import approval.
What makes a useful identifier photo?
- The full number is visible and in focus
- The surrounding area shows where the number is located
- Lighting does not hide stamped characters
- No digital retouching changes the identifier
- A second wider photo connects the close-up to the vehicle
If the number is difficult to read, request a workshop-assisted photo or independent inspection rather than guessing.
Warning signs that require investigation
- Different characters appear on different documents
- The number area shows unusual grinding, welding or repainting
- A plate is loose, damaged or missing
- The seller provides only a typed number and refuses a physical photo
- The engine appears to have been replaced without supporting records
- The VIN decodes to a different model or engine family
A warning sign does not always prove wrongdoing, but it should be resolved before funds are committed or shipping is booked.
What if the engine has been replaced?
An engine replacement may be legitimate, but the current number must match the official record and be acceptable to the destination authority. Ask for supporting workshop and registration evidence. Do not assume the export process will automatically correct an undocumented change.
Protect identifier data responsibly
Buyers need enough information to verify the transaction, while sellers should avoid publishing complete identifiers unnecessarily in public advertisements. Full-resolution identity records can be shared securely with a serious buyer, inspector or appointed agent.
Identity before condition and price
A beautiful car with inconsistent identity records is not a safe export purchase. Complete the identifier check before negotiating around minor cosmetic issues.
